News Roundup – October 30, 2008 – Disguises

Bad Ideas dressed up like Good Ideas are still Bad Ideas.

The popularity of an idea does not make it good.

The unpopularity of an idea does not make it bad.

So todays roundup.

* * * * *

“Unimproved services” dressed up as “not running a deficit” is still a bad idea.

  • Jim Flaherty, finance minister, will not engineer a surplus on the “back of Canadian Families.” And, while we appreciate the idea of not being overburdened, the paycheques for politicians, the military, CSIS and many other ridiculous ideas fit very nicely on our backs.  But improving healthcare, childcare, and other essential services is not something that should be the burden of Canadian families; that is the burden of a wage earner; screw everyone else.
  • Stay at home parents deserve to have vision and dental covered.  Dental coverage for everyone would actually do much to assist in decreasing absenses from work.  Health care actually lowers the cost to employers and employees are not gouged by the insurance companies.

“Lethal Weapons” disguised as “Nonlethal Alternatives” are still lethal.

  • How many stun gun and taser deaths does there have to be until they are outlawed?  I am not a fan of guns or violence, but serisously? If the police had used a real gun with real bullets they can always shoot the leg, the shoulder or what have you.  But the taser will not be so kind.
  • What is the difference between accidentally killing with a taser and doing the same with a gun?

“Morality” dressed up as “Common Values” still is government mandated morality.

  • Idon’t care what you say, demanding that people believe or agree to a set of principles is still government mandated morality.  I believe in equal rights. I believe that Quebec should be allowed to remain French.  I believe in the seperation of Church and State.  But I also believe that the government should not demand that people agree with any of these.
  • There are principles that we live by but someone should be able to come to this country and believe otherwise.  That isprovided they do not pose a risk to others or themselves.
