News Roundup – October 30, 2008 – Self Preservation

If there is one thing that Capitalism and Politics have taught me, it is that self-preservation is the most important motivator.  Whether it is ensuring that I have a roof overhead, food on the table and clothes on my back, or if it is ensuring that the quality of those things is preserved or increased.

And so todays news roundup.

* * * * * *

I believe in minority governments.

  • I beleive that if the parties are able to play together, then they can acheive something everyone can at least admire the spirit in which it was acheived.   And yet when the Liberals have a leadership race the Conservatives and the NDP are worried that their support would slip away. Neither party cares about what is best for Canada.  They only care about what is best for themselves.
  • If voters are so fluid that they can move from one party to another depending on who the leader is, then maybe it is time to abolish the party system altogether and let people decide which person represents them.  The party system is antithetical to representative democracy.

The Tories are going pick their cabinet.

  • And there are a number of females to choose from.  Now let me get this clear, I have been criticized for speaking of women as “talent” but here that is what they are doing.  I’m not saying it is wrong.  I’m not saying it is right.
  • It seems rather sad though, in all honesty, that women have made such progress only to be used as political tools to bolster the appeal of a political party.  While it is important that all people be treated equal, this is not case with politics.  If women are being chosen for position based on merit then I would be ecstatic.  But since they are only being chosen because Harper wants the voters to know he likes tits too, well, that is just sad.

The Canadian dollar rises with oil.

  • While that makes sense it makes me sad.  I don’t like a high dollar.  I am in Korea and want to send money home, but the higher the dollar, the worse it is for me.  Plus, if I understand economics, a lower dollar is better for Canadian export.
  • No one who believes in Capitalism can really complain about the status of the dollar.  The fact of international trade means that there will be some winners and some losers.  I cannot sell something for more than the cost production, shipping, etc., without someone getting screwed. Canada is rich in resources.
  • We could, theoretically, cut ourselves off from the world and still survive.  But since we won’t do that, we must live with the fact that our entire existence (and that of everyone else) depends on the generousity of strangers.    Because as soon as someone starts getting greedy we have what we have now, a financial crisis.
